This half-plate daguerreotype shows Daniel Sturgeon (1789-1878) in a half-length portrait turned three-quarters to the left. Brady's studio made the image between 1844 and 1860, a period when the daguerreotype was the leading portrait process and sitters often paid for close, detailed likenesses. Sturgeon, a Pennsylvania politician who later served in the U.S. Senate, is one of the notable figures captured by Brady's camera. The gold toning, applied after exposure, adds warmth and strengthens the image's tonal range. Handwritten numbers scratched on the plate and the back show that it passed through several hands before entering the Library of Congress collection.
