Junius Brutus Booth, the English-born tragedian, appears here in half-length, turned three-quarters to the left and wearing theatrical costume. This half-plate daguerreotype, gold toned, is credited to Mathew Brady's studio and dated somewhere between 1844 and 1852, before Booth's death in 1852. The sitter identification comes from an 1899 Scribner's Magazine listing, though the record also gives an alternative attribution to the actor Edwin Forrest, so the name is best read as a considered attribution rather than settled fact.
