James Buchanan, the fifth president, is the sitter in this gold-toned whole plate daguerreotype, shown in a half-length view turned three-quarters to the left. The record dates it to between 1844 and 1856, a window that includes his years as Secretary of State and his 1856 presidential campaign. The plate is attributed to Mathew Brady's studio, one of the most prominent portrait operations of the period. Its identification rests on an 1856 engraving published in Frank Leslie's Illustrated News, which helps anchor the portrait to Buchanan's public life.
