Shown at three-quarter length and turned slightly to the right, James Buchanan appears in this half plate daguerreotype, which was gold toned and made in Mathew Brady's studio at some point between 1844 and 1860. Buchanan, a Pennsylvania Democrat, served as secretary of state under James K. Polk and later as the 15th president, from 1857 to 1861. The catalog record says this plate is probably a copy of another Brady daguerreotype, numbered 428, and that it came to the Library of Congress in 1920 by transfer from the U.S. War College. Gold toning was often applied to add warmth and durability to the image.
