Taken on February 14, 1849, just weeks before his presidency ended on March 4, this daguerreotype shows James K. Polk seated and turned three-quarters to the right. It was produced in Mathew Brady's Washington studio, which was among the most prominent portrait operations of the period. Polk died in June 1849, about three months after leaving office, so the portrait is one of the last made of him as president. The gold toning on the silvered plate adds warmth and depth to the tones, a finishing step that many daguerreotypists used to sharpen their images.
