The inscription on the back of this sixth-plate daguerreotype reads "James B. Yates Sect. of the Senate in 1857," which would make the sitter a Senate secretary while still in his late teens, given the record's birth year of 1838. He sits at a desk, turned three-quarters from the camera, in the formal pose common to portrait studios of the late 1850s. The plate survives in the American Colonization Society Records at the Library of Congress. The society, founded in 1817, aimed to resettle Black Americans in Liberia. The plate was also shown in an exhibition of portraits by Augustus Washington, an African American daguerreotypist, though this plate's photographer is unidentified.
