Seated in a chair and turned to the right, Ethan Allen Hitchcock (1798-1870) appears here at three-quarter length in this quarter-plate daguerreotype. Hitchcock was an Army officer and writer, and he was a grandson of Ethan Allen of Green Mountain Boys fame. He later served as a Union general during the Civil War. The image dates from between 1851 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were a leading portrait medium, and the floral motif on the case, with its central oval framed by scrolls, reflects the decorative taste of the period. The photographer is not recorded.
