Seated at a desk in three-quarter view and wearing glasses, John Hanson appears here as a legislator, identified on the back of the plate as senator from Bassa County, Liberia. The sixth-plate daguerreotype dates from about 1856 to 1860, when the American Colonization Society was resettling Black Americans in Liberia, a republic the Society had helped establish on the West African coast and which declared independence in 1847. The photographer is unidentified, but the plate survives in the Society's records at the Library of Congress and was later included in an exhibition on Augustus Washington, a Black American daguerreotypist. It offers a rare glimpse of a Liberian public official from that era.
