Unlike many portraits on this board, this daguerreotype is identified by name: a note on the back of the plate reads "Sen. Borland, Arkansas," and the sitter was matched to a woodcut published in *Gleason's Pictorial* on March 5, 1853. Solon Borland represented Arkansas in the U.S. Senate in the late 1840s and early 1850s, a period when daguerreotypes had become the common medium for politicians and their families. The plate was produced in Mathew Brady's New York studio, and its gold toning gives the silvered surface a warmer tone and a bit more durability. The half-plate size and the three-quarter pose show the conventions of mid-century studio portraiture.
