A sixth-plate daguerreotype of Alexander Barrow, a Louisiana senator who died in office in 1846, shows him in half-length, turned three-quarters to the left. Mathew Brady's studio made the plate sometime between 1844 and 1846, when Brady was building his reputation photographing prominent Americans. Its gold toning, which warmed the silver image and helped preserve its surface, was a common finishing step for the best studio work of the period. The back of the plate notes a transfer from the U.S. War College in 1920, before it entered the Library of Congress.
