James Bankhead, who lived from 1783 to 1856, sits for this half-plate portrait facing front in military uniform, with his sword at his side. The plate was made in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose operation photographed many army officers and public figures in the 1840s and 1850s. Gold toning, applied after exposure, warmed the silvery image and helped protect its delicate surface. A notation on the back of the plate records a transfer from the U.S. War College in 1920, which shows how the picture came into institutional holdings.
