Mabel Gardiner Hubbard, who would later become the wife of Alexander Graham Bell, appears here as a young girl in a half-length daguerreotype made around 1860. The sixth-plate image is a small, mirror-bright positive sealed in a plain leather case with a push-button closure, the sort of keepsake families commonly carried or displayed in the 1850s and 1860s. Its photographer is unknown, but the Rinhart hallmark on the case helps date the object. The plate came to the Library of Congress through the Gilbert H. Grosvenor collection of Bell family photographs, a reminder of how closely these early portraits were kept within family circles.
