Mabel Hubbard, later Mabel Hubbard Bell, appears here as a young girl, seated in full length in this sixth-plate daguerreotype. Made around 1860, when the daguerreotype was giving way to cheaper paper-based processes, the image is sealed under glass in its original case, whose central floral motif surrounded by scrolls is worth a closer look. Mabel was the daughter of Boston lawyer Gardiner Greene Hubbard, and she married Alexander Graham Bell in 1877. The photographer is unidentified, but the piece is preserved as part of the Bell family photographs at the Library of Congress.
