A full-length seated portrait taken outdoors on the roof of 48 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia sets this daguerreotype apart from the studio busts and head-and-shoulders views common in the 1840s. Early daguerreotypists often worked on rooftops and in open skylit spaces because strong daylight shortened exposures, which were still long enough to require a sitter to hold very still. The paper label on the case gives the date as 1843 and credits the maker only as "W.Y.M." The sixth-plate size and the leaf motif on the case frame are typical of the period's small, portable portraits.
