The inscription "Gen. Brady" scratched on the back of this half-plate daguerreotype identifies the sitter as Hugh Brady, an Irish-born officer who spent most of his life in the United States Army. He served through the War of 1812, including the fighting at Lundy's Lane, and this portrait dates from the last years of his life, between 1844 and 1851. Brady sits in civilian dress rather than uniform, which was common for officers sitting for portraits away from duty. The gold toning, applied to strengthen the image and reduce glare, was a finishing step many studios used in the 1840s. The plate also carries the number 150 scratched on its face, probably a studio or cataloguing mark.
