Two men, Nathaniel Ruggles Childs, born in 1814, and Albert Childs, born in 1821, sit side by side in this half-length portrait, both facing the camera. The plate is a quarter-plate daguerreotype dated November 25, 1842, and its hallmark refers to Plumbe's patent of October 22, 1842. A note written on the back of the wooden frame gives the sitters' names and the same date, which helps tie this image to a specific sitting in the early years of American photography. Daguerreotypes like this one were made on silvered copper and sealed under glass, so the image shows its finest detail, and its mirror-like surface shifts with the light.
