Scratched on the back of this half-plate daguerreotype is the note "Sen. Clemens, Indiana," which conflicts with the record of Jeremiah Clemens (1814-1865), who represented Alabama in the U.S. Senate. The portrait was produced in Mathew Brady's studio, which made many of the period's best-known portraits of public men in the 1840s and 1850s. Gold toning deepened the silver image and made the plate more durable, giving the sitter's face and dark coat their soft, warm contrast. The plate came to the Library of Congress in 1920 by transfer from the U.S. War College.
