Mason, shown in three-quarter length and turned to his left, sat for this half-plate daguerreotype from Mathew Brady's studio at a time when he was a leading voice in the U.S. Senate for Virginia. He later helped write the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, a law that made him one of the most divisive figures of the antebellum years. In 1861, after Virginia seceded, he became a Confederate envoy to Britain, and he was among the two men seized from the British mail steamer *Trent* that November, an episode that nearly drew Britain and the United States into war. The plate's exact date is uncertain, but the record places it between 1844 and 1860.
