Few early portraits capture a sitter who had been both a governor and a United States senator, and this one shows Roger Sherman Baldwin in three-quarter length, turned slightly to the left. Baldwin was a Connecticut lawyer who argued before the Supreme Court in the 1841 Amistad case, on behalf of the African captives. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's Washington studio, where many politicians sat during the 1840s and 1850s. Someone scratched "Sen. Baldwin, Con." on the back, a label that helps identify the sitter, since daguerreotypes rarely carried names.
