The name Ichabod B. Crane is scratched into the back of this half-plate daguerreotype, which is the detail that ties the sitter to a specific life rather than a generic portrait. The plate is gold toned, a treatment that warmed the silver image and sharpened its shadows, and it was made in the studio of Mathew Brady between 1844 and 1857, when portraits of this kind were prized for their fine detail. Its transfer to the U.S. War College in 1920 suggests the plate was kept in military hands for decades, a reminder of how many early portraits survive through institutional collections.
