A brass mat stamped with the name J. P. Ball of Cincinnati frames this quarter-plate portrait of an unidentified man and woman seated side by side. Daguerreotypes like this were usually sealed under glass in a hinged case, and this one's case is decorated with flowers surrounded by scrolls. Because the image is a direct positive on polished silver, it shifts between positive and negative as the viewer tilts it, so the sitters seem to change with each angle. The picture dates from between 1847 and 1860, a period when the daguerreotype was the leading portrait process in America.
