A seated, three-quarter length portrait of an unidentified woman, dated 1844, places this daguerreotype among the earliest years of commercial photography, only a few years after Louis Daguerre announced his process in 1839. Sitters of this period often had to hold still for long exposures, and the sharp, mirror-like silver surface of a daguerreotype captures fine detail in dress and posture that later processes would blur or lose. Because the sitter is unnamed, the image rests on its composition and materials rather than a known story, which makes it a useful record of how middle-class portraiture looked in the mid-1840s.
