A full-length studio portrait of a man in Middle Eastern dress with his arm around a boy, this half-plate daguerreotype is gold toned, which sharpened its tones and helped protect the surface. Exotic costume was a popular prop in mid-century studios, where sitters often posed in borrowed garments from distant places. The plate was produced in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose New York and Washington galleries made many portraits of the era. Its scratched numbers and 1920 transfer from the U.S. War College suggest it passed through institutional hands before reaching the Library of Congress.
