The brass mat stamped "J. P. Ball, Cincinnati" distinguishes this quarter-plate daguerreotype, which shows an unidentified man from the waist up with his arm resting on a draped table. Cincinnati was a busy river city in the middle of the nineteenth century, and portrait studios there served a growing merchant and professional class. The pose, with the arm on a table, was a common way to suggest composure and respectability. Because a daguerreotype is a mirror-like silver surface, the image shifts with the angle of light, so the face can look sharp from one angle and faint from another.
