Jerusha Field, a Quaker from New York and Peekskill according to the note that accompanies this daguerreotype, is shown half-length, seated in a chair with one arm resting on a draped table. The sixth-plate format was small and precious, usually sealed under glass in a case, and this one was made in the years between 1840 and 1860, when portrait daguerreotypes were the most popular form of photography. The photographer is unidentified, so the sitter's own family history, preserved through a gift from the Field family in 1997, is the main record of who she was. Quaker sitters of this era often favored plain dress and restrained settings, which makes the simple tablecloth and unadorned pose worth noticing.
