A half-length, full-face portrait of an unidentified man with a moustache, this image is a sixth-plate daguerreotype, a small format that studios sold widely in the 1840s and 1850s. The photographer is unknown and the record does not name the sitter, so the picture is best read through its physical form: a silvered copper plate that reflects the viewer when tilted. It is held within the American Colonization Society Records at the Library of Congress. The society, founded in 1817, aimed to resettle Black Americans in Liberia, so the portrait reached the library through those papers.
