Unlike most portraits on this board, this sixth-plate daguerreotype belongs to a specific body of work: it was included in the Library of Congress exhibition *A durable memento*, which showcased portraits by Augustus Washington, an African American daguerreotypist. Washington worked in Hartford, Connecticut, in the 1850s before emigrating to Liberia, though the bearded sitter in this full-face, half-length pose remains unidentified. The plate is held in the American Colonization Society records, the organization founded in 1817 to resettle Black Americans in Liberia, which ties this unnamed face to that migration.
