A hand-colored sixth-plate daguerreotype shows George Leverett Stowell as a boy of about six, standing three-quarters length with one hand resting on a draped table. The case cushion is embossed with the name Bogardus and the address 229 Greenwich, New York, tying the portrait to the studio of Abraham Bogardus, a well-known New York daguerreotypist of the 1850s. Hand-coloring, which added tints to cheeks, clothing and background, was a popular finishing touch in this period. The picture is held in the Ellery C. Stowell Papers at the Library of Congress, which links it to the family.
