A three-quarter length portrait shows Jane Roberts, wife of Joseph Jenkins Roberts, who was serving as president of Liberia when the couple visited the United States in the early 1850s. This sixth-plate image is a copy of an original daguerreotype attributed to Augustus Washington, a Black American photographer who ran a studio in Hartford, Connecticut, before emigrating to Liberia. The copy was made for the American Colonization Society records now held by the Library of Congress, and its case back, with a label naming the sitter, carries a diamond geometric design.
