Written on the back of this plate is the note identifying the sitter as A.F. Russell, senator from Montserrado County, and he sits at a desk, turned full face toward the camera. Russell (1817-1884) was one of the Americans who settled in Liberia under the American Colonization Society, founded in 1817 to resettle Black Americans there, and the plate survives among the society's records at the Library of Congress. Although the maker is unidentified, the picture was later included in an exhibition of work by Augustus Washington, an African American daguerreotypist active in the same years.
