A small sixth-plate daguerreotype, hand-colored with pigment on the cheeks and clothing, shows a woman posed three-quarter length and facing the camera squarely. Its accompanying label identifies her as Ruth Fitz, Mrs. Chester Fitz of Charlton, though the catalog title spells the surname Fitts, so the name is worth checking. The photographer is unidentified, but the Rinhart hallmark and the 1844 to 1860 date range place it in the decades when daguerreotypes were the most popular form of portrait photography. The plate entered the Library of Congress in 1959 as part of the Clara Barton Papers.
