The brass mat on this portrait is stamped Ball & Thomas, 120 West 4th Street, Cincinnati, Ohio, which places the sitting in that city in the late 1850s. Its sixth-plate format was a small, inexpensive size that suited the pocket cases many families carried in those years. The sitter, a woman shown head and shoulders and turned to her left, remains unidentified. Her case is decorated with mixed flowers framed by scrolls, a typical ornament of the period's protective cases.
