A woman in spectacles and a lace cap turns to the left in this small sixth-plate daguerreotype, its silver surface warmed by gold toning. Her name is not recorded, but the plate bears a scratched number, 333, on its back and reached the Library of Congress in 1920 by transfer from the U.S. War College. It was produced in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose New York and Washington operations made many portraits like this one during the 1840s and 1850s. Gold toning was applied to strengthen and warm the image, so the tonal quality is worth noticing alongside the sitter's pose and dress.
