The case holding this small portrait is decorated with a flower arrangement in a vase, a touch that shows how carefully such keepsakes were presented in the 1850s. The brass mat is stamped "F. Grice," which likely identifies the maker or supplier who finished the piece. Ninth-plate daguerreotypes like this one, about 2 by 2½ inches, were a popular size for lockets and cases. The sitter is unidentified, but her head-and-shoulders pose and the mirror-like silver surface are typical of portraits made around 1855, when the process was still a common way to record a face.
