Augusta Currie Bradhurst Field sits facing the camera in this sixth-plate daguerreotype, a three-quarter length portrait housed in a case embossed with the name of its maker, Anson, of 589 Broadway in New York. Daguerreotypes had been the first commercially successful photographic process since the late 1830s and were widely popular through the 1840s and 1850s, though by 1860 they were competing with paper prints. The polished silver surface and the brass mat around the plate show how these portraits were protected and treated as keepsakes. The piece came to the Library of Congress as a 1997 gift from the family of William B. Osgood Field.
