The brass mat on this quarter-plate daguerreotype is stamped with the name J. P. Ball of Cincinnati, linking the portrait to a busy river city with a lively daguerreotype trade in the 1850s. The sitter, an unidentified man shown head and shoulders and facing the camera, was captured between 1847 and 1860, when the process was the most popular way to have one's likeness made. Only the back of the case is shown, and its zigzag pattern is a typical decorative touch on cases of the period, which protected the fragile silvered plate.
