Richard Yates appears here in a head-and-shoulders pose, turned slightly to the left, in a half-plate daguerreotype. The Illinois politician later served as the state's governor during the Civil War, and this portrait was made in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1860, when the daguerreotype was the leading method for studio portraits. The Library of Congress holds the image as a transfer, a copy that came through the U.S. War College and was recorded there in 1920.
