Scratched into the face of this half plate daguerreotype are the words "Gen. Scott," a label linking the sitter to the army officer who led American troops into Mexico City in 1847. Here Winfield Scott wears civilian dress, his head turned three-quarters to the right and his eyes fixed on the camera. The plate was produced in Mathew Brady's studio between 1851 and 1860, when gold toning was used to deepen and protect the delicate silver image. Scott would later run for president as the Whig nominee in 1852.
