Trimmed to an irregular outline and gold-toned to deepen its tones, this head-and-shoulders daguerreotype shows Sam Houston turned three-quarters to the right. Houston led Texas to independence from Mexico, served as the republic's president, and later represented Texas in the United States Senate and governed the state, so his likeness carried real public weight. The plate was produced in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose gallery photographed many prominent Americans during the years when the daguerreotype was the leading photographic process. A number scratched on the back suggests the plate was tracked among the studio's other work.
