Horace Mann, the Massachusetts educator who championed public common schools, sits head and shoulders in this half-plate daguerreotype, turned three-quarters to the right, with its gold toning still giving the silver surface a warm cast. Mann led the state board of education in the 1830s and 1840s and later served as president of Antioch College in Ohio, where he died in 1859. The plate is credited to Mathew Brady's studio, and an inscription scratched on its back names the sitter, a detail that helps confirm the identification. The image was transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920 before entering the Library of Congress collection.
