The most distinctive feature of this half-length portrait is its profile pose: the sitter, Peter Paul Duggan, turns three-quarters to the right, a more deliberate angle than the frontal views common in the period. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1860, and gold toning gives the silvered surface warmer tones and added durability. A note scratched on the back identifies the sitter, and the plate later passed through the U.S. War College in 1920 before entering the Library of Congress collection. Duggan died in 1861, so the portrait captures him in the years just before the Civil War began.
