Ralph Hoyt sits three-quarters turned to the right, a book in hand, in this half-plate daguerreotype made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860. The image was identified from an 1875 engraved portrait in Duyckinck's *Cyclopaedia of American Literature*, which suggests Hoyt was known in literary circles and that the book is more than a prop. Gold toning, applied after exposure, gives the silvered plate its warm, deeper tones and protects its delicate surface. Brady's studio was among the most prominent portrait operations of the period, so the picture also shows the polished, formal style of mid-century American portraiture.
