Identified by comparison with a mezzotint engraving by T. Doney, this half-length portrait shows Robert John Walker in three-quarter view turned to the right. Walker, a Mississippi Democrat, served as Treasury Secretary under James K. Polk, where he pushed through the Walker Tariff of 1846, and later governed the Kansas Territory in 1857. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, and its gold toning gives the image a warm, mirror-like surface. The number 56 scratched on the back is a studio or collection mark that helps trace the plate's history.
