Shown in a three-quarter turn to the right, John W. Francis sits for this half-plate daguerreotype made in Mathew Brady's studio. Francis (1789-1861) was a New York physician known for the literary dinners he hosted, which drew writers and public men of the city. The plate is gold toned, a treatment that deepened its tonal range and helped stabilize the image. Scratched inscriptions on the back include a 1920 notation recording its transfer to the U.S. War College. The picture dates from sometime between 1844 and 1860, a period when Brady's studio was among the busiest portrait operations in the country.
