Edward John Phelps (1822-1900), the Vermont lawyer who later served as U.S. minister to Britain, sits in this half-length daguerreotype with his arms folded and his body turned three-quarters to the right. The plate came from Mathew Brady's studio, where portraits of this kind were made in the 1840s and 1850s, and gold toning gives its silvery surface a warmer glow. Trimmed corners and a number scratched on the back suggest it passed through several hands before the U.S. War College transferred it to the Library of Congress in 1920.
