Levi Woodbury appears here in a half-length portrait, his head turned three-quarters to the right, a pose that shows the sitter's profile while keeping his face toward the viewer. A former governor of New Hampshire, Woodbury served as Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of the Treasury under Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren before joining the Supreme Court in 1845, and the portrait dates from his years on the bench. Mathew Brady's studio made the daguerreotype, and the gold toning gives its silvery surface a warmer, richer cast.
