The inscription scratched into the face of this plate sets it apart, naming a Mr. Hamilton followed by "HBM, R.N.," which likely points to a officer in the British Royal Navy. This half-plate daguerreotype, showing the sitter three-quarters turned to the right, was made between 1849 and 1860 at the studio of Mathew Brady, whose galleries photographed many public figures of the period. Gold toning, applied after development, deepened the image's tones and helped protect its delicate silver surface. The plate later passed to the U.S. War College and was transferred to the Library of Congress in 1920.
