What sets this plate apart is the inscription scratched into its face, "Hunt, Texas," which ties the image to Memucan Hunt (1807–1856), a Texas political figure of the Republic era. The half-plate portrait shows him in three-quarter view, turned to the right, and was produced in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1856, when daguerreotypes were the dominant form of studio portraiture. An engraving of Hunt ran as the frontispiece of *DeBow's Southern and Western Review* in October 1852, which is how the sitter was identified. The gold toning and trimmed corners are typical of plates from this period.
