Shown in three-quarter profile, turned to the left, William Hickling Prescott appears in this whole-plate daguerreotype. Prescott wrote popular histories of the Spanish conquests of Mexico and Peru and of the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, and he dictated much of his work to secretaries because he had lost the sight of one eye and was nearly blind in the other. The plate was made at Mathew Brady's studio between 1848 and 1850, and gold toning gives the image its warm, silvery tone. A lithograph of the same likeness by François d'Avignon appeared in Charles Edwards Lester's 1850 *Gallery of Illustrious Americans*, which supports the identification.
