This half-plate daguerreotype shows William Morris Meredith, a Philadelphia lawyer, turned three-quarters to the left and framed from the waist up. Brady's studio made the plate in the late 1840s. A.H. Ritchie later engraved the likeness for *The American Review* in August 1849, and that engraving is how the sitter was identified. Meredith became Secretary of the Treasury under Zachary Taylor in 1849 and stayed on into the Fillmore administration, so the portrait shows a public man at the start of a national post. Gold toning warms the silver tones, a finish common in portraits of the period.
